Police say Gilroy suspect legally purchased assault rifle used in mass shooting

Gilroy police said at a news briefing Monday that a 19-year-old man who allegedly killed three people and injured at least a dozen others at the Gilroy Garlic Festival Sunday bought his AK-47-type assault rifle legally a few weeks ago.

Gilroy Police Chief Scot Smithee confirmed that the suspect, Santino William Legan, legally bought the assault rifle used in the shooting in Nevada on July 9.

While the names of the victims are still unavailable, Smithee said the victims include a 6-year-old boy, a 13-year-old girl and a man in his 20s.
Smithee also said there were reports of a second suspect, but no confirmation that a second suspect did any shooting.

There is currently no motive in the mass shooting.
