Oakland Athletics manager Bob Melvin will be absent from the dugout for at least one more game following the death of his mother, Judy, on Friday afternoon, according to bench coach Mark Kotsay.
Melvin left the club Friday, returning to the Bay Area to be with his mother.
Said Kotsay:
“Bob was able to be there. Made it back. It was important for him to be there, we all pushed for him to get there and we’re thankful he did get there and was able to be with her.”
Kotsay, who has taken on the duties as acting manager in Melvin’s absence, added that, at the time, added that the team is unsure on the details regarding the services and whether Melvin will be absent from further Spring Training dates.
Judy had been a longtime resident of Menlo Park, where Bob was born and raised.
