Teens have mercy on Picasso

After a wild party at a Novato mansion last month, authorities have recovered a missing Pablo Picasso lithograph worth an estimated $30,000.

A mega-mansion owned by imprisoned former Ukrainian Prime Minister Pavlo Lazarenko — and previously lived in by actor Eddie Murphy — was the scene of an illegal party of more than 100 teenagers on May 28.

Once the party was busted up and all the drunk teens fled from the 19,500 square foot estate, the property’s caretaker reported several things missing.

In addition to the $30,000 Picasso piece, about $5,000 in leather jackets, laptops, and silver candlesticks also went missing, according to Novato police Sgt. Eric Riddell.

Passerby Greg Atamaniuk noticed the lone lithograph propped up against a fence on Burning Tree Drive and turned it into authorities.

Sgt. Riddell told the IJ:

“It appears the unknown suspect(s), placed the painting there and intended it to be found.”

The lithograph is from a 1957 series of 50 prints titled “femme au chignon,” or woman with bun. In a 2008 Sotheby’s auction listing, one of the lithographs in the series was estimated to be worth $30,000 to $40,000.

So far no arrests have been made, and there is no word on the other missing items.
