49ers vs. Giants playoff history is deep and painful

The Giants at Candlestick. Has a familiar ring to it.

Maybe the New York Giants will do the same thing our beloved San Francisco Giants did so frequently there: Lose.

If a 49ers-Giants playoff matchup sounds familiar to diehard 49er fans, it’s because it is. The two rivals have squared off seven times in the playoffs over the last 30 years, with the games providing some of the 49ers’ — and Joe Montana’s — most painful memories:

The Giants ended the 49ers playoff dreams in ’85 and ’86, and then famously foiled the 49ers’ three-peat dreams in 1990 on Roger Craig’s infamous fumble.

It hasn’t all been bad news for the 49ers against the Giants though. The 49ers’ last faced the Giants in the playoffs in 2002, when Jeff Garcia led a charging 24-point comeback to win 39-38. That team lost to Jon Gruden’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC championship game.

The 49ers kick off against the Giants in this year’s NFC championship game this Sunday at 3:30.
