The number of PG&E customers in the Bay Area without electrical service due to fierce winds Tuesday is down to 17,517 as of 5 p.m., the utility said.
The area with the largest is the South Bay with 9,660 customers, the East Bay with 3,695 and the Peninsula with 3,584.
More than 42,000 customers were without power Tuesday morning, a result of winds that gusted more than 90 mph at some elevations.
PG&E advises that people avoid touching or trying to move power lines, keep a backup phone, secure outdoor furniture and use generators safely. Generators should be installed by a licensed electrician and placed in a well-ventilated area.
People can report downed power lines by calling 911 then PG&E at 1 (800) 743-5000.
