Inland cities brace for days of excessive heat

Cities across the Bay Area are preparing for a heatwave expected to continue through Thursday evening, but as usual, inland areas will be hit the hardest.

Temperatures in some cities are expected to peak Wednesday, but according to latest forecasts provided by the National Weather Service, temperatures in some areas will maintain peak level or rise Thursday before a cooling trend brings some relief.

Concord and Walnut Creek are expected to reach 106 degrees both Wednesday and Thursday before dropping to 94 degrees Friday, with another 10 degree dip Saturday. Livermore’s temperature is expected to peak at 105 degrees Thursday before returning to low 90s Friday.

According to Concord Community Relations Manager Jennifer Ortega, the Concord Senior Center at 2727 Parkside Circle opens to the public as a cooling center any time temperatures rise above 100 degrees. The center will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday.

Additional cooling centers are offered throughout Contra Costa County and can be found through the county’s updated resource list.
