Rookie Susac homers twice as Giants pound Brewers 16-3

Rookie catcher Daniel Susac hit the first two home runs of his major league career and drove in four, and the San Francisco Giants scored seven times in the sixth inning to bury the Milwaukee Brewers 16-3 on Wednesday afternoon at Oracle Park.

The Giants (46-62) piled up 17 hits against the second-best record in the National League and finished their six-game homestand 4-2, a turn from a road trip on which they won just one game against Seattle and Kansas City. The Brewers (67-41) had won the middle game of the series 8-2.

Giants manager Tony Vitello called the series win ‘massive’:

“It was great for our crowd, good to do it at home.”

Luis Arraez and Heliot Ramos each collected four hits. Arraez passed Marlins shortstop Otto Lopez for the league lead in batting average at .331. For Arraez, Wednesday afternoon looks to be his final time putting on a Giants home uniform, as he is a trade candidate before the Monday trade deadline. After the game, Arraez wouldn’t acknowledge that notion but he thanked the organization for believing him and giving him an “amazing” chance to play second base.

Arraez said:

“They gave me a good opportunity to play second base and I really appreciate that and I wanna say thanks to the organization to give me the opportunity and having fun [playing second base].”

It was a workmanlike afternoon on the mound for Logan Webb (W, 6-7, 3.93 ERA), who went six innings on five hits and a walk, striking out four.

Webb credited Milwaukee for their ability to manufacture runs and it was on him to limit the damage as much as he can.

The Brewers originally listed Shane Drohan as their starter but instead went with left-hander Thomas Pannone (L, 0-1, 6.00 ERA), making his first major league appearance since June 30, 2023. He had last pitched Tuesday for Triple-A Nashville against the Sugar Land Space Cowboys, working into the sixth, striking out five and allowing two runs.

Speedy Brice Turang led off the game with a bunt single to the left side of the infield but was stranded at third to end the inning. It was Webb’s first home start without allowing a first-inning run since June 27 against Atlanta.

Pannone issued a first-inning walk of his own and escaped without the runner crossing the plate.

Jung Hoo Lee opened the second with a line drive into left-center that sliced away from center fielder Garrett Mitchell, who dropped what looked like a routine catch as Lee slid into second. A walk to Willy Adames set up the bottom of the order for the first run of the day.

Susac would not settle for just one. The rookie catcher launched his first major league home run 411 feet to straightaway center, giving San Francisco a 3-0 lead.

For Susac, he has had two separate stints on the injured list, an uncontrollable way to take a hitter out of their groove. But he credited the coaching staff for keeping the faith in him that his first trip around the bases would come soon. He said:

“Putting the work with [Oscar Bernard] and [Hunter Mense] in the cage, just trying to get back to the swing that i feel like I came into this year with. So its been a grind, just trying to stay at it.”

Two singles to start the third put Milwaukee in position to answer, with David Hamilton stealing second between them for his 20th of the season and taking third on Chad Pratt’s infield hit. It was Turang again, hitting a one-hopper to Bryce Eldridge at first, who fielded it but could not keep Hamilton from breaking home and took the throw to second instead. Webb then induced a double play from Jackson Chourio to end the inning.

After successfully stealing second in the first inning, Ramos looked to do the same in the third. He was called out after Milwaukee challenged the initial safe call.

The Brewers kept crawling back in the fourth. Jake Bauers greeted Triples Alley to lead off the inning, and after a walk to Christian Yelich and a strikeout, he scored when Mitchell hit a slow roller that Webb fielded. Webb might have run Bauers down between third and home but took the sure out at first.

Pannone’s day ended after three innings as the Brewers turned to Chad Patrick for his 35th appearance. After a leadoff single from Adames, Patrick retired the next three. He ran into trouble in the fifth with runners at first and third and two outs, Arraez having stolen third, but after a quick meeting on the mound Patrick got Lee to ground out to Turang on the first pitch to end the inning.

Webb looked like his normal self in the middle innings, retiring the Brewers in order in the fifth on 11 pitches with two strikeouts. In the sixth he worked through the middle of the Milwaukee order, allowing only a two-out single to Yelich.

The Giants took their best chance to extend the lead in the sixth, loading the bases without recording a hit. Adames was hit by a pitch, stole second and reached third on a throwing error behind the plate. Susac walked, and after Jesus Rodriguez came on to pinch-hit for Grant McCray, Milwaukee brought in Aaron Ashby, who walked him to fill the bases.

Christian Koss cashed in with an RBI single to left, and Arraez immediately sent one into center for another. Eldridge struck out, but with the bases still loaded Ramos shot the first pitch into right field to score two more, thumping his chest in celebration. Devers followed with a fielder’s choice that brought Arraez home on another error by the catcher.

Ashby, brought in to limit the damage, instead lit the fuse on getaway day. He was pulled having recorded one out, with the scoreline reading 8-2.

Searching for answers, Bryse Wilson did not make things better for the Brew Crew. Lee ripped a double down the right-field line to score two more and give the Giants 10 runs.

The Brewers loaded the bases in the seventh, but Sam Hentges allowed just one run, getting Chourio to ground into his second double play of the game.

San Francisco answered with three more in the bottom half on RBI hits from Arraez and Lee and a run-scoring fielder’s choice from Eldridge.

Susac put his name in lights again in the eighth, homering a second time on a solo shot that bounced off the top of the wall in left-center and into the bleachers. It came off infielder Andrew Vaughn, who had pinch-hit in the seventh, moved to third base and then took the mound. Ramos and pinch-hitter Drew Cavanaugh added RBI singles to finish the scoring.

Jackson Flora made his first appearance at Oracle Park since the Giants drafted him No. 4 overall in the 2026 draft. Flora, a lifelong Giants fan, was handed a jersey pregame by Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey and met members of the roster as well as manager Tony Vitello.
