Reporting from ORACLE PARK
Rookie outfielder Drew Gilbert recorded his first major league hit and Logan Webb pitched into the seventh inning as the San Francisco Giants dropped the series opener against the San Diego Padres 4-1 at Oracle Park on Monday night.
Gilbert, a former Houston Astros first-round prospect acquired in the Tyler Rogers trade, gave the 31,018 in attendance a jolt of energy in the third inning. He laced a sharp single to left field off Padres veteran Yu Darvish for his first career hit after starting his big-league career 0-for-10.

With two outs and Willie Adames batting, Gilbert stole second base and the Freddy Fermin throw bounced into center field. Jackson Merrill pounced in from center and fired a rocket to third baseman Manny Machado, who swiped a tag at a sliding Gilbert. The play was called safe on the field but ruled out on replay.
Gilbert said he planned on getting a lot more hits in the big leagues:
“Obviously, I know this league is tough. The first hit is cool, but at the end of the day, it’s what can I do after that.”
Giants Manager Bob Melvin said he was glad to see Gilbert get his first hit out of the way:
“He’s an aggressive player. Both offensively, defensively – there’s a lot of energy to what he does. … There’s a lot of confidence, and there’s a lot of bravado in his game.”
Webb gave the Giants a solid start, holding San Diego scoreless until Padres center fielder Jackson Merrill lined a double to right field, driving in Fernando Tatis Jr. from second base for a 1-0 lead.
Rafael Devers tied the Padres with a solo home run (23) to left on the second pitch from Darvish (W, 2-3, 5.61 ERA) to open the bottom of the sixth. The shot to center was Devers’ third home run in his last four games.
The Padres picked up speed in the top of the seventh after Jake Cronenworth singled to right, allowing Bryce Johnson to score. Cronenworth’s single was immediately followed by a 362-foot blast to left from Fernin (4), extending the Padres lead to 4-1.
Webb (L, 10-9, 3.34 ERA) threw a total of 98 pitches and 69 strikes before the Giants summoned Joey Lucchesi from the bullpen in the seventh.
