Reporting from ORACLE PARK
The San Francisco Giants just couldn’t catch a break Tuesday night, dropping their second straight to the San Diego Padres, 5-1.
Casey Schmitt doubled, singled twice and reached base three times, scoring the Giants’ only run in the first inning. But San Francisco (59-61) went just 3-for-10 with runners in scoring position and stranded 11 overall.
After the loss – San Francisco’s 12th in their last 13 home games – left fielder Heliot Ramos wasn’t happy with their recent stretch:
“It’s just not happening. It’s just frustrating … I don’t know what to tell you, honestly. It’s just not happening.”
The Padres (68-52) struck first in the opening inning when Manny Machado scored on a balk by Giants starter Robbie Ray. The Giants answered in the bottom half with Wilmer Flores‘ infield single scoring Schmitt, who had doubled earlier in the inning.
José Iglesias put San Diego ahead for good in the second, sending his first homer of the season to left after a Ramón Laureano single for a 2-1 lead. Laureano doubled in the fourth and stole third before Jake Cronenworth rewarded his efforts with an RBI single to make it 4–1.
Ray (L, 9-6, 2.98 ERA) pitched six innings, allowing seven hits, four runs (three earned) and one walk, striking out four while recording his 1,700th career strikeout in the third.
Giants manager Bob Melvin praised Ray’s determination to push through six innings:
“For him to want to go out there and pitch that deep into a game — it just shows you who he is. Just a competitor. Unfortunately, we didn’t reward him with enough runs tonight.”
The Giants best chance came in the sixth, when they loaded the bases with two outs. But Patrick Bailey popped out and Ramos fouled out to end the inning.
A Jackson Merrill solo home run off Carson Seymour in the eighth capped the scoring.
