One dead, one injured after shooting aboard moving Muni train

San Francisco police are investigating a fatal shooting on a Muni train that was traveling eastbound between Forest Hill and Castro stations.

Officers at Castro station found two victims on the train. Medics were summoned, and one victim died of their injuries at the scene. A second victim was taken to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Rueca said.

Officer Robert Rueca said in a statement that officers first arrived at Forest Hill station around 9:56 a.m. regarding a shooting. He said officers arrived at the scene but the train had already left, heading to Castro station.

No arrests have been made and the incident remains an open and active investigation.

At a media briefing around noon, Officer Kathryn Winters said the incident appeared to be isolated and not targeted to the LGBTQ+ community and upcoming Pride weekend events.

Transit officials at around 10:07 a.m. sent a tweet out that trains were not running between West Portal and Castro stations due to police activity. The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency deployed shuttle buses for riders needing to head downtown.

At 1:38 p.m., the SFMTA tweeted that trains were once again moving through Castro station.

SFMTA spokesperson Erica Kato said staff was able to review some preliminary footage and passed the footage along to police for their investigation.

As for upcoming weekend Pride events, Kato said the SFMTA will be working with the police to keep passengers safe as well as deploying transit ambassadors.
