SFUSD to open dedicated Covid-19 test site for students, staff

San Francisco Unified School District officials on Wednesday announced plans to open a new Covid-19 test site, capable of testing some 150 students and staff members daily.

The new site is set to open on Tuesday in the Crocker Amazon sports complex parking lot at 799 Moscow St., near Geneva Avenue.

The new site, which is being overseen by Color Health and the San Francisco Department of Public Health, will exclusively test SFUSD students and staff who are experiencing Covid-19 symptoms, as well as anyone who has been in close contact with a student or staff member who tests positive.

The site will be open from 8 a.m. to noon Tuesdays through Fridays, and test results will be available within 24 to 48 hours. Appointments are not required and walk-in testing will be available, district officials said.

Mayor London Breed said in a statement:

“It has never been more important for us to do all that we can to ensure that our kids remain safely in the classroom — and testing for COVID is an important part of that. … Testing must be made easy and quick so that students and staff can get back into the classroom as soon as possible, and this testing site is dedicated to making that happen.”

Dr. Grant Colfax, the city’s public health director, said:

“The new testing site for SFUSD at Crocker Amazon is part of the infrastructure we have been building to support our children and school community as we navigate through full time, in-person learning this fall.” 

In addition to the new site, SFUSD staff and students also have access to mobile testing sites across the city. Also, earlier this month, the city and the district launched Covid-19 vaccination sites at four school campuses.

District Superintendent Vincent Matthews said:

“SFUSD is already operationalizing one of the largest COVID-19 testing efforts in San Francisco, and we are thrilled to be able to offer another dedicated testing site for students and staff who are experiencing symptoms or are considered a close contact so they do not have to go into a school site for a COVID-19 test.”  

Matthews added:

“By prioritizing and investing in COVID-19 mitigation efforts, we can keep our communities safe.”

The new test site aims to keep schools up and running with minimal disruptions while the pandemic endures. To date, pediatric cases among residents have remained low and stable, city officials said.
