Lower temperatures and increased humidity helped crews overnight at a wildfire west of Lake Mendocino.
Cal Fire said 200 structures are threatened and an unknown number have been destroyed or damaged. A team was requested Monday to come out and assess the fire’s damage so far.
The fire forced mandatory evacuation in portions of Calpella, which sits north of Ukiah along Interstate Highway 101 and just south of State Route 20. Additional evacuation warnings and roadblocks have been posted by the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office on Nixle, last updated at 8:42 a.m. Monday.
Cal Fire reports the fire burned 257 acres and was 20 percent contained as of 7:15 a.m. Monday. Firefighters were working on the ground and from the air, including 262 crew members, 22 engines, seven bulldozers, six water tenders and two helicopters.
The burned area was reduced from the 275 acres reported Sunday due to better mapping, officials said.
An evacuation center is open at the Mendocino County Office of Education, 2240 Old River Road in Ukiah. Animal shelter sites have been set up in Ukiah at the Redwood Empire Fair Grounds Mendocino County Animal Shelter.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
