Magnitude 5.9 quake among 21 Mono County earthquakes in under one hour

A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck near the Nevada-California border in Mono County Thursday afternoon.

The U.S. Geological Survey reports the quake hit at 3:49 p.m. about 3 miles southwest of Coleville at a depth of just over 6 miles. Residents across the Bay Area reported feeling the shake, and many have noted feeling a substantial magnitude 4.2 aftershock that came 10 minutes later and another magnitude 4.6 that occurred nearby at 4:33 p.m.

The surrounding area has experienced 21 earthquakes above a magnitude 1 since 3:48 p.m., with most registering above magnitude 3.

The California Office of Emergency Services said there are no preliminary reports of damage or injuries, though the situation is still developing. Caltrans is responding to several rockslides along U.S. Highway 395 and State Route 89.
