Police say man suffered ‘self-inflicted gunshot wound’ in Great Mall incident

Milpitas police on Sunday said a shooting victim Saturday night at the Great Mall suffered “a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was not the victim of an act of violence.”

The 22-year-old San Francisco man was taken to a local hospital with a wound not considered life-threatening.

Officers responded at about 5:15 p.m. to “numerous” reports of a shooting and called for customers and workers shelter in place while the mall was searched and evacuated, with officers escorting people to safety in the parking lot of the center on Great Mall Drive.

There were two unrelated medical emergencies during the evacuations, which required medical transportation to a local hospital.

Officers completed the search operation shortly before 9:30 p.m.

The incident came on the last weekend before Christmas during public health orders that mandate that retail outlets operate at 20 percent capacity.
