A man was fatally struck by an on-duty police officer vehicle early Wednesday morning, Benicia police officials announced.

Around 2 a.m., the officer was traveling along the 1900 block of East 2nd Street in Benicia in his patrol car and struck a pedestrian.

Police officials say paramedics were immediately called and life-saving efforts were performed, but the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim’s identity was not immediately known, but he is described as a white man between 30 and 40 years old.
