A man was fatally struck by an on-duty police officer vehicle early Wednesday morning, Benicia police officials announced.
Around 2 a.m., the officer was traveling along the 1900 block of East 2nd Street in Benicia in his patrol car and struck a pedestrian.
Police officials say paramedics were immediately called and life-saving efforts were performed, but the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim’s identity was not immediately known, but he is described as a white man between 30 and 40 years old.
Interim Chief Mike Greene said:
“This is a tragic incident for all involved. Our deepest condolences go out to the victim’s family and loved ones.”
The officer was not responding to a call of service at the time, and is uninjured.
According to police officials, the officer was immediately removed from the scene of the collision and the investigation was taken over by the California Highway Patrol and the Solano County District Attorney’s Office. The Benicia Police Department is not involved in the investigation.
