UPDATE: Armed homicide suspect releases hostage, remains barricaded in police standoff

An armed double-homicide suspect is barricaded in an Oakland commercial building Thursday afternoon. The man had taken a hostage who has since been released, a police spokeswoman said.

Officers responded at 11:15 a.m. to the 1600 block of High Street.

Police established communication with the suspect and negotiated the hostage’s safe release as of 1:51 p.m. According to police, the hostage was unharmed but the suspect remains barricaded inside the building. The police communication with the man has been on and off, Oakland police spokeswoman Officer Johnna Watson said as of 12:30 p.m.

Police are not yet releasing any details of the double homicide.

Several streets in the area — an approximate six-block radius — are closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic and residents in the area have been asked to shelter in place while police continue to negotiate with the suspect.
