What began as a peaceful racial justice march through the streets of Oakland’s Grand Lake neighborhood late Saturday evening turned violent between demonstrators and police officers on scene attempting to keep the situation lawful.
About six people were arrested, Oakland police say.
More than 200 demonstrators marched along Mandana Boulevard late Saturday evening. Police posted a message on Twitter at 9:51 p.m. saying the Assembly was declared unlawful and that the crowd needed to leave or face arrest.
Police said rocks, bottles, lasers and shields “were used to assault officers” and that one officer was injured. According to police, officers deployed “minimal” gas and smoke, and confiscated shields.
It was the second consecutive night that demonstrators marched along Oakland streets. More than a dozen protesters were arrested Friday evening on charges of vandalism. Another protest Wednesday night drew a crowd of about 700 people and while it was largely peaceful, police said “agitators” sparked fires, broke windows and vandalized multiple businesses.
