An emergency paid sick leave ordinance recommendation was passed unanimously by the San Jose City Council during a special meeting Wednesday, setting the stage for its approval next week.
More than 200 Save Mart, Lucky and FoodMaxx grocery stores will open their doors one hour early and one hour later for police, fire and healthcare personnel during the novel coronavirus pandemic.
Santa Clara County law enforcement will issue citations instead of making arrests for a handful of offenses to promote safety and prevent jail crowding during the spread of novel coronavirus, including anyone who would be arrested on a warrant for failing to appear in court for pending misdemeanors, diversion matters or post-conviction matters other than violent felonies and those who would be arrested for felonies with standard bail set at $25,000 or less.

Gavin Newsom and two state education leaders, schools in Santa Clara County and the cities of Oakland and Santa Rosa will move to distance learning for the remainder of the school year because of the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic. - Monterey County: 42 cases, 2 deaths (42 cases, 2 deaths on Wednesday)
- Napa County: 18 cases, 1 death (15 cases on Wednesday)
- San Francisco County: 450 cases, 7 deaths (434 cases, 7 deaths on Wednesday)
- San Mateo County: 453 cases, 10 deaths (388 cases, 10 deaths on Wednesday)
- Santa Clara County: 956 cases, 32 deaths (890 cases, 30 deaths on Wednesday)
- Santa Cruz County: 54 cases, 1 death (49 cases, 1 death on Wednesday)
- Solano County: 54 cases (49 on Wednesday)
- Sonoma County: 91 cases, 1 death (85 cases, 1 death on Wednesday)
- Statewide: 9,944 cases, 213 deaths (8,569 cases, 183 deaths on Wednesday)
