A 51-year-old inmate died at the Elmwood Correctional Facility in Milpitas on Wednesday night, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office.
The man, whose name isn’t yet being released, had been booked into custody in Santa Clara County last Friday and was discovered unresponsive in his jail cell at about 10:25 p.m. Wednesday by deputies doing a routine exchange of bedding, sheriff’s officials said.
Life-saving measures on the man were unsuccessful and paramedics pronounced him dead about a half-hour later.
A preliminary investigation found no signs of foul play in the death, which occurred while the man was housed alone. The case is under investigation by the county’s sheriff’s office, district attorney’s office and medical examiner’s office, as is standard protocol for in-custody deaths.
