A helicopter crash said to have killed NBA legend Kobe Bryant Sunday in Calabasas, California was carrying eight additional people, according to officials. The retired Lakers player was 41.
Officials with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said through their Twitter account at 11:25 a.m. that five people were killed in the crash and there are no reported survivors. However, a spokesman for the sheriff’s department said during a press conference at 2:34 p.m. that nine people, eight passengers and a pilot, were all killed.
Calabasas City Councilman David Shapiro confirmed that Bryant was among the victims.
Although it has been widely reported that Bryant’s 13-year-old daughter, her teammate and another parent were among those killed Sunday, officials have not confirmed identities and are waiting to do so until after the coroner’s work is complete and next of kin are notified.
The crash and fire occurred just before 10 a.m. in a hilly area that required Los Angeles County Fire Department crews to use several hundred feet of host to extinguish the blaze made more challenging by the presence of magnesium.
Details are still emerging and the Federal Aviation Administration is currently at the scene as the cause of the crash is investigated.
