The public has been invited to attend a citizenship oath ceremony and Mayan cultural celebration in Oakland, Calif. Saturday, January 25, 2020.
A citizenship oath ceremony that includes Mayan dancers will be held Saturday for 20 newly naturalized citizens at Oakland City Hall.
The citizenship candidates, lawful permanent residents who have met all the requirements for citizenship, represent 11 countries including Guatemala, El Salvador and Burma, according to a release from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
Saturday’s ceremony will feature a Mayan cultural leader, powwow style, and Mayan dancers and a speaker from the Native community.
The ceremony is the fourth and final event in an outreach project to the Oakland Indigenous community, focusing on the Mam Maya population.
The goal is to provide information and raise awareness regarding immigration issues in the Indigenous communities.
All are welcome, and the Mayan cultural leader involved gave permission to film the ceremony, which is a very unusual step taken to honor the new citizens, according to the U.S. immigration agency.
The event will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the council chambers of Oakland City Hall, 1 Frank H. Ogawa Plaza.
