Three teens died and two suffered major injuries in a crash off of Foothill Road near Pleasanton on Christmas night, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Officers responded at 9:57 p.m. to a report of the crash on Foothill Road just north of Castlewood Drive. They arrived to find a downed power line near the roadway and a vehicle that had overturned and hit a large tree just east of the road, CHP Officer Tyler Hahn said.
Three people were trapped inside the car and two others had been ejected. The driver and two passengers were pronounced dead at the scene, while two other passengers were taken to a hospital with major injuries, according to Hahn. Two brothers were among those who died.
Investigators determined the vehicle was heading south on Foothill when, for some reason, the car crossed the northbound lane, hit the power pole and then the tree.
The impact from the crash severed the power pole at the base and upended the pole, causing a transformer to rupture and spill about 20 gallons of mineral oil onto the roadway and dirt shoulder, Hahn said.
The roadway remained closed as of 7:15 a.m. while crews repair the power pole.
Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the Dublin-area CHP office at (925) 828-0466.
