Bay Area Rodney Reed supporters join a growing worldwide call to release the prisoner as mounting evidence suggests his innocence in the murder of Stacey Stites. Reed has served 21 years in a Texas prison and was scheduled for execution November 20, 2019 until he was recently granted a stay.
A vigil on behalf of Rodney Reed, a prisoner on death row in Texas who had been scheduled for execution on Wednesday, will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday on the Polk Street steps of San Francisco City Hall, 1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place.
A last-minute Texas appeals court decision on Friday indefinitely halted the execution of Reed, who has maintained his innocence in the 1996 killing of Stacy Stites.
Supporters are now seeking his release from prison and organizers say the San Francisco rally is one actions scheduled nationwide on Reed’s behalf.
Scheduled speakers at the rally include the Rev. Dr. Amos Brown, President, NAACP San Francisco Chapter; San Francisco Public Defender Manohar Raju; San Francisco Supervisor Rafael Mandelman; A.J. Alston of the University of San Francisco Black Student Union; and Brenden Shucart of the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club.
Candles will be provided to attendees.
