Capitol Corridor train strikes, kills person in Hayward

A person was struck and killed by a Capitol Corridor train in Hayward on Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

The collision was reported shortly after 2:20 p.m. east of the Hayward station and involved train No. 537, which was heading from Sacramento to San Jose, Amtrak spokeswoman Olivia Irvin said.

The Alameda County coroner’s bureau has confirmed that the collision was fatal.

No injuries were reported to the 71 passengers on board or any crew members.

Train service through the area has been delayed while Amtrak police work with local law enforcement to investigate the collision, Irvin said.

The transit agency originally reported a “trespasser incident” shortly after 2:35 p.m.
