A Salinas man has been sentenced to two years in prison for his role in an assault on a teen in 2018, Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine Pacioni announced Wednesday.
Louis Gutierrez, 39, pleaded guilty on June 19 to felony assault with a gang enhancement, prosecutors said.
Gutierrez, a member of the Norteno street gang, has two prior strike convictions for attempted murder and assault with a semiautomatic firearm.
The assault occurred on Aug. 7, 2018, at a publicly organized event at a local skate park in which Gutierrez served as an event coordinator.
The victim in the assault was a 14-year-old who was sitting on his bicycle when Gutierrez approached and threatened the boy. Prosecutors said another defendant, identified as 21-year-old Richard Diaz approached and attacked the teen, knocking him off of his bicycle and hitting him several times with closed fists in his head, face and body.
Although Gutierrez is not seen striking the teen in a cellphone video that captured the incident, he was heard encouraging the fight and telling others in the crowd to let the attack continue until he later directed Diaz to stop. Diaz pleaded no contest on April 26 to a felony assault charge stemming from the attack.
