Powell Street station reopens after BART train strikes, kills person on tracks

A fatality has been reported Thursday afternoon at BART’s Powell Street station in San Francisco, according to the transit agency. Around 2 p.m., a person was reported on the tracks at the station while a train approached, BART spokesman Chris Filippi said. A collision occurred, and the individual on the tracks has been pronounced dead, Filippi said just after 3:30 p.m.

Filippi said:

“Based on witness accounts, there is no foul play suspected and the person intentionally entered the trackway.”

The Powell Street station was closed while emergency crews responded to the scene. The station reopened around 4:20 p.m. but passengers can expect a major residual systemwide delay, according to BART officials.
