A man convicted of defrauding individual victims and government agencies of more than $20,000 over a two-year period was sentenced to four years in state prison Friday, Santa Cruz County prosecutors said. Aron Kiefer was convicted of 20 felonies and nine misdemeanors against 11 individual victims.
Prosecutors say he stole at least $15,000 as part of a rental scam that left some victims with no place to live. He also falsified welfare and food stamp applications to obtain more than $7,000 in benefits. He also threatened two ex-girlfriends and distributed revenge porn photographs and videos he had made of them, sometimes without their consent while they were unconscious.
Assistant District Attorney Ilia McKinney said in a statement:
“The sheer number of people whom Mr. Kiefer victimized in our community over such a short period of time is astounding.”
“I’m proud of the victims who came forward despite their fear that the defendant would continue to retaliate against them.”
