Contra Costa Community College District Chancellor Fred Wood announced Thursday, July 18, 2019 that he plans to retire from his position in March 2020. The district will seek a replacement in coming months.
Fred Wood, who has served as chancellor for the Contra Costa Community College District since 2017, announced Thursday afternoon that he plans to retire this spring.
In a statement, Wood said:
“Although there is never a perfect time for a leadership transition, the district is in a great place with a very strong financial position, stabilized enrollment, and doing a tremendous job of serving our students and community.”
He added that he’s retiring after four decades in education due to personal obligations.
Wood attended Diablo Valley College and grew up in Martinez. According to a statement issued by the district Thursday, he is grateful that he had the opportunity to contribute to the district’s legacy. Wood plans to stay on until the end of March 2020, but the district’s governing board will have to come up with a plan for recruiting a new chancellor in the coming months.
They hope to have the new hire in place prior to Wood’s departure to ensure a smooth transition.
The district includes Contra Costa College, Diablo Valley College and Los Medanos College as well as education centers in Brentwood and San Ramon.
