Pedestrian dies after tractor-trailer hit-and-run

A pedestrian struck by a tractor-trailer in a hit-and-run in downtown San Francisco early Thursday morning succumbed to their injuries, police said.

Officers responded to the collision around 5:40 a.m. at Fifth and Market streets.

After striking the pedestrian, the tractor-trailer fled the scene, leaving the victim with life-threatening injuries, police said. The victim was taken to a hospital and has since died, according to police Officer Robert Rueca.

Around 8:40 a.m., officers located the tractor-trailer near Broadway and Front Street and were able to detain the driver, Rueca said. Further information about the driver was not immediately available and the hit-and-run collision remains under investigation.

Police closed the intersection of Fifth and Market streets for nearly four hours, but the streets have since reopened.
