Police seize more than 2,000 pounds of illegal fireworks from storage unit

Police in San Leandro on Tuesday seized more than 2,000 pounds of illegal fireworks from a storage facility.

Around 10 p.m. Tuesday, officers with the San Leandro Police Department were investigating two suspicious men at a storage facility on Davis Street.

Police said the two men, a 41-year-old Oakland resident and a 51-year-old Fremont resident, were at the closed business and were loading boxes into a cargo van from one of the storage units.

Officers searched the boxes and the storage unit and discovered more than 2,000 pounds of illegal fireworks.

Police said the men were cooperative with investigators, were identified, interviewed and ultimately released from the scene. Due to the amount of fireworks recovered, police called in the Alameda County Explosive Ordinance Disposal Squad to take custody of the fireworks and dispose of them in a safe manner.
