An Oakland auto shop owner forked over $7,600 for a ticket to Game 4 of the NBA Finals so his daughter can accompany Mayor Libby Schaaf to the event Friday evening at Oracle Arena.
The purchase price was established during an auction Schaaf held in order to raise money for Oakland Promise, a program that provides collage-bound Oaklanders with scholarships and mentors, according to a news release from the mayor’s office.
The winning bidder, Joe Zeiph, is the owner of Porboys German Automotive Service in the Fruitvale District.
Zeiph’s daughter Sarah, 15, will attend the game as Schaaf’s “personal guest,” according to the mayor’s office.
“I’ve known Libby a long time and used to wrench on her car long before she was elected to any office,” Zeiph said.
“I thought it would be a great way for my daughter to spend an evening with the mayor of Oakland.”
Sarah and the mayor will watch the Golden State Warriors take on the Toronto Raptors, who have a 2-1 lead in the seven-game series. Oakland Promise has helped more than 1,400 Oakland high school students attend college, having raised more than $10 million since it was founded in 2016, the mayor’s office said.
