Inmate who died after distress call identified as 23-year-old man

A 23-year-old inmate from Elmwood Jail who died at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center on Tuesday night has been identified as Jose Arellano, according to the Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office. Sheriff’s deputies and medical staff responded at 8:15 p.m. to a report of “medical distress” at Elmwood Jail at 70 S. Abel St. and began administering first aid and CPR.

At 8:40 p.m., Arellano was taken to the hospital at 751 S. Bascom Ave.

Deputies said he was pronounced dead at 9:30 p.m.

No foul play is suspected in his death, according to the sheriff’s office, which said he died of pre-existing medical conditions. The medical examiner’s office said Thursday that his cause of death is still pending. Arellano was originally booked into jail on April 23, 2018, for alleged assault with a deadly weapon and a probation violation. He was scheduled to appear in mental health treatment court in late June, according to court records.
