Petaluma woman, 44, identified as pedestrian killed

The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office has identified a woman who died when she was struck by a truck near Sonoma State University on Thursday as Ishi Ayita Barron Smith, 44, of Petaluma.

Police from Cotati and Sonoma State University responded to reports of a woman running in front of passing vehicles on Petaluma Hill Road between East Cotati Avenue and Curtis Drive in unincorporated Sonoma County east of Rohnert Park.

When the California Highway Patrol responded around 9:15 p.m., emergency responders said the woman had died. Smith was struck by a 2004 Dodge Durango driven by a 37-year-old Napa man south on Petaluma Hill Road. The driver stopped at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, CHP Officer David deRutte said.

Smith was not a student at Sonoma State, deRutte said.
