Driver killed, passenger seriously injured after car overturned and hit tree

A 45-year-old man suspected of drunk driving died in a car crash near Santa Cruz on Saturday and his male passenger was seriously injured, the California Highway Patrol reported Monday.

The man was driving a 2007 BMW 328i north on Soquel San Jose Road south of Old Turnpike Road around 10:20 p.m. when he lost control of the car, overturned and struck a tree, according to the CHP.

He and his 42-year-old passenger were transported to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose, where the driver was pronounced dead. The CHP is investigating the crash and the Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office will identify the man once his family is contacted.
