A 64-year-old San Lorenzo man was killed Tuesday morning when a semi truck collided with his motorcycle at a traffic signal at a highway on-ramp in San Leandro, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.
Gregory Ott died in the collision that occurred at about 9:20 a.m. near the on-ramp to southbound Interstate Highway 238 from Hesperian Boulevard, CHP Officer Gabriel Walters said.
The 21-year-old driver of a Kenworth Aerocab big-rig was stopped as the lead vehicle in the left-hand turn lane on northbound Hesperian Boulevard while waiting to enter the on-ramp to southbound Highway 238 when Ott pulled his 1996 yellow and black Harley-Davidson motorcycle in front in front of him in an apparent attempt to be the lead vehicle, Walters said.
When the signal turned green the truck turned forward and its front end struck the motorcycle. Ott was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Walters.
He said the truck driver may not have been aware that the motorcycle was next to him. The truck driver, who wasn’t injured, remained at the scene and cooperated with officers.
Drugs and alcohol are not considered factors in the collision.
