Fremont police will introduce first zero-emission Tesla to patrol fleet

The Fremont Police Department on Wednesday will showcase a new zero-emission Tesla patrol vehicle during a media event.

The vehicle, a customized 2014 Tesla Model S 85, will be the city’s first fully electric-powered patrol vehicle.

The Police Department will be used as part of Fremont’s Electric Vehicle Pilot Program and will be used to help determine the economic and practical feasibility of deploying a zero-emission vehicle for police field operations.

A pilot program team is tasked with monitoring the performance, durability, range and costs of the patrol vehicle, according to police. The media event will also feature four police vehicles currently in service for the Police Department, including a pursuit-rated Ford Fusion Hybrid, a Ford Escape Hybrid, a Ford Fusion plug-in and a Toyota Prius.
