A teenage boy kayaking in Marina Lagoon in San Mateo was seriously injured Sunday afternoon and the operator of a vessel that hit him was arrested on suspicion of operating a boat while intoxicated, police said today.
The 15-year-old from San Mateo was kayaking with another person in two separate kayaks near the 600 block of Fathom Drive shortly before 4 p.m. when a motorboat ran into him. The teen was taken to a trauma center and the driver of the boat stayed at the scene to cooperate with authorities, San Mateo police said.
Stephan Chiari, 48, of San Mateo, was arrested on suspicion of reckless operation of a boat, and operating a boat while intoxicated with injury.
The injured teen was in critical condition today at a trauma center, police said.
Although alcohol was determined to be a factor, the collision remains under investigation.
