Man dies after struggle with San Mateo Co. deputies

A person contacted by a San Mateo County sheriff’s deputy has died after a struggle with deputies Wednesday afternoon in Millbrae, sheriff’s officials said.

At about 1 p.m., a deputy contacted a man who had been running in and out of traffic in the 1300 block of El Camino Real, according to the sheriff’s office.

The man allegedly assaulted the deputy and a struggle ensued. The deputy called for help and other deputies arrived. A struggle continued until deputies arrested the man.

San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said deputies used a Taser on the man.

The man was taken to a hospital where he died. He was 36 years old and a San Mateo County resident.

Sheriff’s officials said the deputy who initiated contact with the man was also taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries. Wagstaffe said the deputy has since been released from the hospital.

El Camino Real between Millwood Drive and Santa Helena Avenue is closed as law enforcement investigate.

The San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office and the San Mateo County coroner’s office will investigate the man’s death.

Anyone who may have witnessed the events is asked to call the district attorney’s office at (650) 363-4636.
