Global Climate Action Summit heats up next week

Environmental leaders and activists from around the world will gather next week at San Francisco’s Moscone Center to discuss ways to continue combating climate change.

The three-day Global Climate Action Summit from Sept. 12-14 will feature international and local leaders from states, regions, cities and businesses along with national government leaders, scientists, students, nonprofits and others “in a new wave of mobilization,” organizers said.

“The summit will underscore the urgency of the threat of climate change by mobilizing the voices and experience of real people, in real communities already facing real and stark threats. It will challenge and channel the energy and idealism of people everywhere to step up and overcome it.”

The co-chairs of the summit include Gov. Jerry Brown and entrepreneur and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Bloomberg is the United Nations secretary general’s special envoy for climate action.

In-person attendance for the plenary and other high-level sessions is by invitation only, but members of the general public will be able to stream the summit live on YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.

In addition, people are encouraged to participate in hundreds of affiliate events taking place in the Bay Area throughout the week, including climate action panels, workshops, tours, exhibits and other special events.

On Sept. 13, cultural organizations located around Moscone Center will be open from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. offering free access for a variety of exhibitions and programs as well as live music in Yerba Buena Gardens, and Ford GoBikes will be free for the public to use all day.
