A suspect was arraigned Tuesday on two counts of assault on a peace officer for allegedly attacking two police officers with a metal breaker bar when they responded to a fight between the suspect and his roommate last month, prompting an officer to shoot him.
Israel Donaterico, 29, who also is charged with exhibiting a deadly weapon to resist arrest, is scheduled to return to Alameda County Superior Court on Wednesday to be assigned an attorney and possibly enter a plea.
Hayward police said one of the officers who was involved in the incident in the 100 block of Hewitt Place at about 7 p.m. on May 21 shot and injured Donaterico because he was uncooperative and struck the officer with a large metal bar.
The female officer and Donaterico were both taken to a hospital to be treated for their injuries but the officer was treated and released shortly after the confrontation, police said.
Donaterico underwent surgery and was in critical condition for some time, but finally was released from the hospital on Sunday and was booked into Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, where he’s being held in lieu of $250,000 bail, according to police.
Officers responded to the 100 block of Hewitt Place on May 21 after a person reported that they were fighting with their roommate and that the roommate had their car keys and wouldn’t give them back, police said.
The caller also said the roommate, later identified as Donaterico, could be under the influence of an illegal drug, according to police.
Responding officers tried to talk with Donaterico but he was uncooperative and would not follow any directions and “aggressively pulled away” when officers tried to detain him, Hayward police said in a statement shortly after the incident.
Officers used a Taser stun gun on Donaterico but it had no effect, according to police.
Donaterico then suddenly grabbed a large metal bar off the ground and lunged at a female officer, striking her in the arm “with significant force,” police said.
The officer then fired her service weapon and struck Donaterico, according to police.
Hayward police said the officer who shot Donaterico is a 15-year veteran of their department.
