Fraud allegations trigger Alum Rock audit

Assemblymember Ash Kalra and state Senator Jim Beall are requesting an audit of the Alum Rock Union Elementary School District after allegations of fraud, the Santa Clara County Office of Education announced Friday morning.

The audit request largely follows a November 2016 audit conducted by the state Fiscal Crisis & Management Assistance Team that concluded there was sufficient evidence that fraud or misappropriation of funds may have occurred, county spokespeople said.

The county’s Office of Education requested an initial audit after an anonymous tip that the district may have been fraudulently billed for construction and program management services.

Santa Clara County Superintendent of Schools Mary Ann Dewan said in the statement issued by the county that she welcomes the request by Kalra and Beall in order to investigate.

Dewan said that she has taken all necessary steps to work with the Board of Trustees of Alum Rock Union Elementary School District to implement recommendations of previous audits.

If the request is granted, the State Auditor will conduct an audit and determine if allegations made in the last few years of crimes specifically committed by the district’s Board of Trustees have merit.
