The Giants organization has declared Friday’s 7:15 p.m. game against the Los Angeles Dodgers at AT&T Park a rainout, and has postponed Saturday’s 1:05 p.m. game to 3:05 p.m. as weather forecasts predict steady rain until noon Saturday.
Giants lefty Derek Holland (0-1, 5.40 ERA) was slated to take the mound against Dodgers No. 3 starter Kenta Maeda (1-0, 0.00 ERA) Friday, but the matchup will instead be pushed forward a day. This outcome may be somewhat favorable to the Giants, who are hoping to survive as few revolutions of their rotation as possible as they await the returns of starters Jeff Samardzija (right pectoral strain) and Madison Bumgarner (fractured fifth metacarpal of left hand) from the disabled list.
Bumgarner is likely out until at least the end of May, but Samardzija looks to be back much sooner. After a successful bullpen session Tuesday, Samardzija was expected to throw another bullpen session Friday, and potentially pitch in a minor league rehab game over the weekend.
The Giants have yet to provide a solid timeline for the right-hander but if all goes well he could theoretically be back in the rotation by next week.
Friday’s game will be made up the next time the Dodgers come to San Francisco as part of a doubleheader on Saturday, April 28. The makeup game will be a 1:05 p.m. start pushing back the originally scheduled 6:05 p.m. night game to 7:05 p.m.
The Giants encourage fans to hang onto tickets from Friday’s washout as the team will honor them for admittance to the rescheduled April 28 1:05 p.m. game.
According to the Giants, this is only the 33rd home field rainout the team has experienced in 60 years of play in San Francisco.
