Possible human remains found in Marin Headlands

Hikers found possible human remains east of Fort Baker-Sausalito Friday in an area that was once a homeless encampment, the Marin County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.

The skeletal remains were discovered in an open space area of the Marin Headlands near the Golden Gate Bridge that is commonly inhabited by transients, sheriff’s officials said.

Neither the National Park Service nor the sheriff’s office’s Coroner’s Division personnel saw any overt evidence of a criminal act or foul play where the bones were found, the sheriff’s office said.

The bones were collected for additional examination by the Coroner Division’s chief forensic pathologist, a forensic odontologist and a forensic anthropologist. They will then be submitted to the California Bureau of Forensic Services DNA laboratory for positive identification, the sheriff’s office said.
