Oakland explosives suspect charged

A Riverbank man was charged Tuesday with felony possession of components of a destructive device for allegedly possessing materials for making pipe bombs when he was arrested in Dublin after a pursuit early Sunday, Alameda County prosecutors said Tuesday.

Jeremy Guy, 26, also was charged with felony evading an officer, misdemeanor hit-and-run driving and misdemeanor resisting arrest.

Guy, who is being held at the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin in lieu of $500,000 bail, was arraigned in Alameda County Superior Court this afternoon and is scheduled to return to court next Monday to enter a plea.

CHP officer Jason Zimmerman said he and another officer tried to stop a silver Honda CRV driven by Guy on eastbound Interstate Highway 580 near the Redwood Road exit in Castro Valley at about 4:40 a.m. on Sunday after they spotted it traveling at about 85 mph in a 65 mph zone.

Zimmerman alleged that Guy failed to stop and instead “began fleeing in a reckless manner,” made multiple unsafe lane changes, drove on the left hand shoulder and drove at speeds of more than 100 mph.

Zimmerman said Guy took the San Ramon Road exit off I-580 in Dublin but failed to safely negotiate the left turn from the off-ramp to northbound San Ramon Road and collided with a stopped vehicle in the number two lane.

Zimmerman said Guy got out of the Honda and began to run away but he and his fellow officer were able to arrest him with minimal force.

Zimmerman said that when he and the other officer searched the Honda they found several items to construct multiple functioning pipe bombs, including metal with ignition devices attached, about 200 12-gauge shotgun shells and other electrical components.

Guy’s eyes were red and watery, his speech was thick and slurred and his eyes “were extremely dilated,” Zimmerman wrote.

Guy told officers that he had consumed a large amount of Xanax, a minor tranquilizer that’s often prescribed for anxiety disorders, Zimmerman said.

However, Guy wasn’t charged with being under the influence of drugs or alcohol even though Zimmerman wrote:

“I formed the opinion Guy was under the influence of drugs.”

After Guy was arrested, the CHP got a search warrant for the room he shared with his father, Ronald Guy, at the Homewood Suites hotel at 1103 Embarcadero in Oakland.

The hotel was evacuated while the room was searched on Monday night.

Ronald Guy was also arrested but prosecutors didn’t file any charges against him.
