Davis, Healy named Silver Slugger finalists

Athletics Khris Davis and Ryon Healy have been named among Major League Baseball’s Silver Slugger Award finalists.

The Award is rewarded to the best offensive player at each position in each league.

Davis, among the 10 outfielder finalists, is currently second in the American League in home runs, with 39 home runs, behind fellow finalist Aaron Judge (43). His 81 homers over the past two seasons are also the top total in the AL, he is also third in RBIs, with 102 this season.

His top competition will come from Mike Trout, who ranks among the league leaders in batting average (.317) while topping the AL list in on-base percentage (.455) and slugging percentage (.640), and Mookie Betts, who joined Trout as a winner last season.

Healy, one of five finalists at the designated hitter position, has slugged 25 home runs and driven in 75 runs. With one award given to the DH position, as opposed to the three in the outfield, Healy’s chances are slim. Edwin Encarnacion is among the top 10 in the AL with 34 homers (seventh) and 89 RBIs (10th).

The awards are voted on by the league’s coaches, with the winners to be announced in November.

The last Athletic to win a Silver Slugger Award was Eric Chavez, who the American League’s award in 2002 for the third base position.
