49ers sign Boulware to round out practice squad

The 49ers made their final move fielding a 10-man practice squad Tuesday afternoon.

San Francisco officially announced the signing and subsequent placement of former Clemson University star Ben Boulware Tuesday, after the Carolina Panthers released the linebacker earlier this week.

In four season at Clemson, Boulware — 6-foot, 238 pounds — recorded 261 tackles, 26.5 for loss, eight sacks, seven forced fumbles and five interceptions.

Boulware, the recipient of the Jack Lambert Award in 2016, won a national title last year with the Tigers but went undrafted after having an uninspiring NFL combine that included a 4.83 40-yard dash time.

Although the physical attributes may be slightly underwhelming, the things that makes Boulware an intriguing pick up are intangible.

Clearly being an  emotional leader during his time at Clemson, Boulware brings an edge as far as passion and personality are concerned.

That coupled with his championship pedigree after appearing in consecutive national championship game in 2015-16 makes Boulware an excellent addition to the team’s practice squad.

As of Tuesday, the 49ers finalized practice squad is as follows:

LB Ben Boulware

WR Deandre Carter

OL John Flynn

TE Cole Hikutini

CB Asa Jackson

RB Jeremy McNichols

QB Nick Mullens

DL Noble Nwachukwu

WR DeAndre Smelter

OL Darnell Williams Jr.
