Monterey officials donate 10-foot tall metal cross to local church

City officials in Monterey donated an unclaimed 10-foot tall metal cross to one of the city’s churches.

The cross has been donated to St. John’s Chapel at 1490 Mark Thomas Drive.

“We are thrilled and honored to have the cross,” rector of St.

John’s Rev. Robert Ott said in a statement. “It will be installed in an area accessible to the public at any time.”

City officials have had the cross in storage since March. The community of St. John’s recently expressed interest in it, according to city officials.

“We are happy to have found a home for the cross, and appreciate Rev. Ott’s leadership in finding a suitable location on the church’s property,” city manager Mike McCarthy said in a statement.

Church officials plan to place it in an island in the middle of the church parking lot.
