A vehicle was left “riddled with bullet holes” after a road-rage shooting on Interstate Highway 580 in Oakland Monday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The shooting was reported around 1 p.m. on eastbound Highway 580, west of Grand Avenue.
Officers said the driver of a Honda admitted to tailgating a Mercedes-Benz and passing it in an unsafe manner. While the Honda was passing, a passenger “displayed a rude hand gesture” at the Mercedes.
After that the driver of the Mercedes, described only as a black man, pulled a handgun and fired multiple shots at the Honda before speeding off while the victim pulled over. Neither of the Honda’s occupants were injured.
The suspect vehicle was described as a black four-door sedan. The rear license plate was missing and the front plate was tucked between the dashboard and the windshield, officers said.
The CHP reported a road closure shortly before 3 p.m. All eastbound lanes of Highway 580 near Lakeshore Avenue were closed while CHP officials search for evidence of gunfire, finding several shell casings. The highway reopened at about 3:45 p.m.
Anyone with additional information is asked to call CHP investigators at (800) 835-5247.
