Santa is probably too busy to sort through all of the letters he’s getting right about now, but thanks to dedicated U.S. Postal Service volunteers, no child’s missive will go unnoticed.
As part of the 104th annual “Letters to Santa” program, the Oakland Main Post Office opened its “Operation Santa Post Office” Tuesday.
The festive collection center is receiving Christmas letters from kids in several counties served by the Oakland office, including Contra Costa, Alameda, Santa Clara, San Benito and Santa Cruz.
The public is invited to stroll into the Operation Santa Post Office Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. until Dec. 20.
People can go through the letters, pick one out and, with the help of a Postal Service helper, become that child’s secret Santa.
Post Office officials said in a statement:
“Thousands of volunteers and organizations work with Post Offices (nationwide) to respond to letters from children, not only to answer their letters to also provide some basic necessities that children, and adults, often ask for themselves and family members…In many cases, children ask for food, clothing, shelter, and/or a missing parent.”
